6 Considerations when Searching for a Kids Martial Arts Class

Many parents who decide to put their child into a Martial Arts class are students themselves, or have previously trained in some form or other, but this is not the case for all parents. Here are a few pointers to consider if you're actively looking for a Martial Arts Academy or Self-defense class for your children (or yourself even!).

  1. Welcoming: The instructor is happy for parents to watch the class, especially before signing their children up. 1-2 trial lessons are possible before sign-up.
  2. Knowledgeable: The instructor is knowledgeable where his style is concerned, but also regarding his approach to teaching children.
  3. Dojo: The dojo, or training area, should be clean, safe and generally well maintained, as should any equipment used, for example strike pads or punch bags.
  4. Questions: You will need to ask some questions and these will mostly come naturally, as they will relate to your child or to his or her situation and reasons for considering starting Martial Arts. Its important that any instructor or Sensei is happy to discuss with you any questions or concerns you may have.
  5. Insurance: Ensure that the instructor is insured to teach. Usually, if the classes are conducted within a council building such as a sports centre, the instructor will have to have this to use the space.
  6. Due Diligence: Its easier now more than ever to conduct some brief online research and you should take the time to do a quick search to ensure that nothing adverse crops up. If nothing comes up, this isn't necessarily a warning sign, although most Martial Arts instructors and clubs will have some kind of online presence these days. 6b. Associations: still keeping on the topic of diligence, consider if the club is part of an Association, or has any affiliations within the Martial Arts community, this is often a positive indicator that the club does things the right way and the instructor is serious about his teachings. Its worth noting that you can likely sign your children up with a sports or Martial Arts association, usually with some level of insurance included, for as little as €30 per year (worth considering even if you know the club is insured).

The above should most certainly give you a good helping hand in selecting somewhere to train and study Martial Arts. If you visit DCR Academy, then I'm confident Sensei Jose and the academy will tick all the boxes you need to decide to sign your child (or yourself) up.

Almost 2 years now at DCR and I can say that I made a great choice for my Son! Jose is a flag bearer for his style, but open enough to investigate and take onboard useful elements of other styles, which is one of the things that helps him to deliver a good blend of self-defense, stand-up fighting, take-downs and ground fighting to his students.

I wish you the best of luck in your search for a good Martial Arts or Self-defense Academy.
